northAfter the riots on Saturday night, the following night clashes between police and mostly young men broke out in the center of Frankfurt. There were multiple arrests and police were able to identify a suspect who allegedly attacked a police officer on Friday.
Hundreds of people were in the city on Saturday night, a kind of parade could be observed in mild temperatures. The groups strolled through Zeil, Fressgass, and Side streets, some wearing Helloween costumes. Most did not seem as drunk as they did on some summer nights, the alcohol ban was at least partially effective. Everyone was heading somewhere, as if there was something to get lost somewhere, despite the closed clubs and all the other restrictions. In the bars on Opernplatz a lot happened until just before midnight, and the terraces of the bars on Fressgass were sometimes as crowded as in summer. In one, the guests moved their chairs wherever they wanted, there seemed to be no crown requirement here. And no one to correct that.

Meanwhile, at the Konstablerwache there were young men who were obviously waiting for the dealers, customers, friends, and probably the next confrontation with the police. On Friday night, around two dozen unknown men attacked a police patrol in the Zeil who had got out of his car to resolve a dispute between two men. One of the two protested against the determination of their personal data, there was a fight with the policeman. Some 25 young people used this as an opportunity to throw bottles and stones at the officers, one woman tried to attack the officer involved with pepper spray but did not see her. When the police wanted to leave, the man who had refused to give his identity stood in front of the vehicle and held onto the rearview mirror for a while so that the car could not start at first. Several videos of the scene are circulating on the network. Police have now been able to identify an 18-year-old suspect. He is not yet arrested.
The following night it was noted that many were waiting to see if these scenes were repeated. In fact, around 10:45 pm in the Zeil, a passing patrol was stoned again with stones, bottles and eggs; according to the police, there was no reason for this. Later, the police gathered a dozen patrol cars at the main station and people followed them from all sides. “Now it begins”, could be heard from the men’s groups.
Thus begins the day in Frankfurt and Rhine-Main: the most important in summary, with information about mobile radars, road closures, restaurants.
This resulted in a kind of cat and mouse game: if the policemen moved, the crowd would run after them, each waiting for the mistake, the derailment of the other. Police officers were chained in front of the Kaufhof entrance for a long time, another group of officers ran through the crowd with a clearly visible camera, filmed them. The other side had also taken out their cell phone cameras. Someone threw a firecracker in front of the line of those who were waiting, another an egg, but it did not hit anyone.
One of them intimidated the officers, the spectators were already positioned, but his friends dragged him away. And an older man suddenly yelled “Schaaaaaaalke” very loudly, which made everyone laugh, the tension eased briefly. It went on for more than half an hour, but in the end it didn’t stop there. Bottles and eggs flew back to the officers. Also due to the earlier attack on the patrol, nine people were arrested that night. One of them, 17 years old and known to the police, was supposed to appear before the judge on Sunday, the others were allowed to go home.
“I condemn in the strongest terms that people are coming together to massively attack their colleagues and I approve of the fact that they may be seriously injured,” Frankfurt Police Chief Gerhard Bereswill said on Sunday. The police will now do their best to determine other perpetrators. “I assume they will receive a fair punishment,” Bereswill said.
