Pennsylvania after US elections: “Donald Trump fought for us, now we have to fight for him”

Relief and sadness are sometimes very close together. In Pennsylvania they are just neighbors, separated by a few miles. In one place, joy and serenity prevail. On the other: panic, helplessness and anger.

Matthew Munsey waited four years for this moment. The moment you can say, “I think we won.” The 42-year-old leads Democrats in Northampton County, a district an hour north of Philadelphia. It’s the morning after the election, Munsey has barely slept. However, he likes to give an interview. “It’s like a catharsis,” he says. “Biden leads in our district. And if he leads here, he will soon be everywhere.”

“The people made their choice”

At this point, the presidential election is still on the brink. Biden hasn’t won Wisconsin or Michigan, and he’s far behind in Pennsylvania, the state where Munsey lives. Still, local Democrats are confident of victory. He has history on his side: In the past few decades, Northampton County has only voted three times for a man who did not subsequently become president. In all other cases it was said: whoever won here later won the whole country.
