Pence vs. Harris: It’s all about content – politics

The two plexiglass panels are the clearest sign that something is completely wrong. He stands between Donald Trump’s vice president, Mike Pence, and Joe Biden’s candidate for the same office, Sen. Kamala Harris. The two met Wednesday night just under four weeks before the Nov. 3 election at Kingsbury Hall in Salt Lake City for their televised duel. In other electoral campaigns, the debate between the vice-candidates tended to be insignificant. But given the circumstances in which it now took place, there was a very special drama in acting.

It’s not just the plexiglass panels. Per the recommendations of the CDC, the US health authority, pennies shouldn’t be here at all. It should be in quarantine. He should have stayed home because he had contact with a person infected by the crown, the president of the United States, Trump, who is now cured of his disease in the White House. The White House is a crown hotspot.

According to the latest data, more than 30 employees are considered seriously infected. Trump’s wife, Melania, tested positive, generals, key advisers. Even Trump’s valet and aide who keeps the suitcase with the nuclear weapons codes near Trump. Not to mention the 7.6 million Americans who have been infected so far and the 210,000 deaths from corona in the country.

Pence tries to flatter

Moderator Susan Page directly joins the debate with the pandemic, which is quite civilized to begin with. Harris and Pence are not interrupted beyond the usual limits. No need to say “Shut up, man!” like Biden did a week ago when he and Trump had their first televised debate. Trump let the meeting degenerate into an uncontrollable spat with his constant boos, raising questions about whether those debates still have any value.

That was not to be expected here. Politically, Harris and Pence may be light years apart. But they both know how to behave. Pence even tries flattery in the television match and congratulates his opponent on the “historic character” of his candidacy. Harris is the first woman of color to run for vice president of one of the two major parties.

Harris is clearly not impressed by the flattery pennies. Whenever he tries to interrupt her, she looks him directly in the eye, raises an eyebrow and says calmly and firmly, “Mr. Vice President, I’m talking.” Which each time forces Pence to interrupt his speech at least for a moment. Point for harris. She has the vice president under control.

Harris: “It clearly didn’t work out”

Pence is not Harris’ main opponent in the debate, but President Trump. And Pence fights to defend the president. He lists the alleged successes of his government in the fight against the pandemic: the ban on the entry of people from China at the beginning of the pandemic, the development of a vaccine at breakneck speed, the many tests, the distribution of protective equipment.

Now when you look at Biden’s plan, “it looks a bit plagiarized,” says Pence. And unlike Trump a week earlier, he still shows empathy: “Not a day has gone by that I haven’t thought about all the American families who have lost a loved one,” says Pence. “I want everyone to know that they are always in our hearts and in our prayers.”

Harris doesn’t leave it that way. It commemorates the 210,000 deaths by crown in the country. The fact that the vice president is the head of the Corona task force in the White House. And also because Trump is presumably still sick and contagious in the Oval Office, and everyone he calls himself has to put on a protective suit, mask, and goggles. Harris concludes: “Whatever the vice president says the government did, it clearly didn’t work.”

It’s also about content, not just arguments.

Managing the pandemic isn’t the only open flank Harris is stabbing at. With Trump, there are fewer jobs at the end of his first term than at the beginning. He doesn’t care about ordinary people, only about himself. When he was told that Trump had recently paid just $ 750 in income taxes a year to the federal government, he thought he had misheard. It certainly meant $ 750,000. No, $ 750.

Pence rejects the tax issue. The reports “are not accurate.” Trump paid millions of dollars in taxes. This cannot be proven. Trump still refuses to release his tax returns to this day.

Then the debate babbles to itself. They both make their expected points. Harris paints the picture of a completely incompetent Trump administration that cannot control the pandemic, fails to create jobs, trade wars are lost, and racism is fueling the country. Pence, on the other hand, tries to make people believe that there is only one way out of the crisis with Trump.

A fly becomes an internet celebrity

A bow tie provides fun outside of Kingsbury Hall. In the middle of the debate, he settles on the vice president’s snow-white hair and doesn’t move for a few minutes. The fly has now become an internet celebrity with dozens of Twitter.Accounts wie @MikePencefly__, which already has tens of thousands of followers.

The debate may seem boring to some viewers. But if the polls aren’t fooling you, then a little more boredom is exactly what many Americans crave after four years of Trump. Harris and Pence give the impression that they would both make better presidents compared to Trump. And finally it is about content and not just about arguments.

Presenter Page has the closing remarks and invites you to the next television debate of the presidential candidates on October 15 without worry. That might be a bit premature. If Trump is as sick as his medication suggests, then it will be written in the stars if he will be fit enough next week. And above all, if it is still contagious. Biden’s camp has already made clear that Trump can debate with himself on this case.
