Defending champions Liverpool win spectacularly and tightly against newly promoted Leeds United in their first English Premier League game of the season. A total of seven goals are scored, the newcomer to the league never faces. International player Robin Koch debuts to be forgotten in Leeds.

Thanks to a pack of three from superstar Mohamed Salah, English soccer champion FC Liverpool started the new Premier League season victorious. Team Principal Jürgen Klopp’s team won against newly promoted Leeds United in a crazy game at Anfield Road with a score of 4: 3 (3: 2).

In the fourth minute Salah converted a hand penalty provoked by international Robin Koch, shortly before the break, the Egyptian scored a second half (33rd). Even when Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk scored, Koch, who had come to Leeds from SC Freiburg in the summer, lost the decisive head duel (20th).

But the guests that surrounded coach Marcelo Bielsa were not discouraged and tied three times (12./30./66.). In the 88th minute, FIFA referee Michael Oliver decided after a foul by substitute Rodrigo on Fabinho, however, again from a penalty. Salah stayed fresh again and made it 4: 3.

Arsenal dominate without Özil

The team of Argentine star coach Bielsa, who is called “El loco” (“the madman”) in their home country, was consistently combative in the game. The ‘whites’ came straight to the Premier League after 16 years of inferiority.

In the opening game in the afternoon, Arsenal FC had no problems with the newly promoted Fulham FC. The goals in the 3-0 (1-0) away win came from Alexandre Lacazette (8th), Gabriel (49th) and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang of former Dortmund (57th). National goalkeeper Bernd Leno stepped between the Arsenal posts after recovering from injury and had little to do during the 90 minutes. As at the end of the preseason, Rio world champion Mesut Özil was not in the team and Shkodran Mustafi was not due to muscular problems.

Former international Max Meyer also missed a minute in Crystal Palace’s 1-0 win over Southampton FC. From the bench, the 24-year-old saw his teammate Wilfried Zaha’s winning goal (13th).
