An information technology failure at Düsseldorf University Hospital makes running the hospital much more difficult. Now it is also clear how it was caused – by a hacker attack. According to the state government, the IT failure at the Düsseldorf University Hospital is due to an attack by blackmail hackers. Independent science minister Isabel Pfeiffer-Poensgen said in state parliament that the perpetrators had withdrawn the blackmail after contacting police.
He is now also being investigated for wrongful death. According to a report from the NRW Minister of Justice, a patient who had to be transferred to a distant hospital due to the attack on the clinic’s servers died and died there.
The operation of the hospital had been hampered by the attack, so several patients were affected. Rather than normally around 1,000 hospitalized patients, the usual layoffs mean there are now only about 550, a spokesman for the clinic said earlier in the week. The number of operations has dropped significantly from between 70 and 120 per day normally to just 10 to a maximum of 15.
