WITHn months after Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer announced her retirement as president of the CDU party, the party can finally choose to elect a successor. He should be elected digitally on January 16, because the crown pandemic does not allow an ordinary meeting of delegates.

Once again there was a contentious discussion about the procedure in the higher committees. In the presidium that met first, the party’s closest leadership, Schleswig-Holstein Prime Minister Daniel Günther, expressed great concern. According to the participants, he did not primarily question the technical feasibility and legal certainty of the procedure, but asked whether the CDU was sending the right signal to the population. For the moment, all efforts should be invested in fighting the pandemic, so it is better to postpone the election of a new president again, Günther argued.
