The official results are still pending, but the forecasts suggest that the opposition Social Democrats are somewhat ahead in the Romanian elections. Prime Minister Orban claims victory.

After the parliamentary elections in Romania, current Prime Minister Ludovic Orban claimed victory for himself. His central party PNL has four possible coalition partners, he told Realitatea TV that night. Talks about a new government could start on Monday and, in his opinion, should not last long.

A clear result is not yet available. However, the opposition Social Democrats see initial forecasts ahead. According to the opinion research institute Curs-Avangarde, Orbans PNL ranks second with 29 percent, behind the Social Democratic PSD with 30.5 percent.

While Orban viewed his party as “the winner of these elections,” PSD president Marcel Ciolacu interpreted the result of the forecast as a sign that the Romanians had “punished this mockery”, which is the work of the current government.

The ruling coalition would need a third partner

In third place was the new alliance of eco-liberal parties USR-Plus with 15.9 percent. PNL and USR are considering a governing coalition, but would have to find a third partner by an absolute majority if the forecasts are confirmed.

Surprisingly, according to forecasts, the previously little-known, ultra-nationalist, conservative and anti-Western party AUR made the leap to parliament. The “Alianta pentru Unirea Romanilor” (Alliance for the Union of Romanians), which was founded only in September 2019, was forecast to have 5.2 percent in the House of Representatives and 5.3 percent in the Senate .

The Hungarian UDMR party and the small parties Pro Romania (left) and PMP (conservative) are represented in both houses. The first official partial results are expected Monday morning.
