Emmanuel Macron has been defending the publication of cartoons of Muhammad for weeks. Since then, Muslims around the world have protested against the French president. Also in Hamburg, up to 250 people take to the streets. An Islamist institute is behind the demonstration.

In the context of the worldwide protests by Muslims against French President Emmanuel Macron, Muslims also demonstrated in Hamburg. Up to 250 people participated in the protest. The protest march with the slogan “We are against discrimination and out of respect for our prophet Muhammad” moved from Steindamm near the main train station to Rathausmarkt.

In an unannounced counter-demonstration with 15 participants, a French flag and a photo of teacher Samuel Paty, who was killed in France, were retained, the police spokesman said. This caused expressions of disgust among Muslims. But he remained at peace.

The constitutional protection of Hamburg had warned in the run-up to the event. According to the Office for the Protection of the Constitution, the Al-Azhari Institute, which is classified as Islamist and is being watched, was behind the demonstration. “Those who participate in this demonstration are making a common cause with the Islamists,” said the spokesman for the State Office for the Protection of the Constitution, Marco Haase, in the run-up to the demonstration.

In a demonstration call posted on YouTube, the director of the Mahmoud A. institute said that no one could do anything against the prophet or broadcast cartoons of him, “regardless of who he is, even if he is the president of France.” After the murder of teacher Samuel Paty, Macron made it clear that he sees the publication of cartoons critical of religion protected by freedom of expression. France will not “do without cartoons and drawings, even if others withdraw from them,” he said at the funeral of the teacher who was beheaded by an Islamist and who had shown cartoons of Muhammad in class as an example of freedom of expression.

The Al-Azhari Institute in the St. Georg district wants to promote peaceful coexistence between Muslims and non-Muslims in Hamburg with a variety of courses. However, in accordance with the protection of the constitution, there is conveyed an understanding of Islam that is incompatible with the basic free democratic order. Therefore, Muslims must primarily obey the Sharia, the Basic Law is subordinate.
