“Open nurseries safely, quickly and planned”

While some of the schools are reopening, daycare children have to stay home. This causes misunderstandings for many parents. They ask politicians to act faster.

To curb the spread of the coronavirus, nurseries across the country have been closed since mid-March. Many parents ask that daycare centers be opened faster. A parent initiative even sends a public letter to the Minister for Family Affairs Franziska Giffey. In an interview with t-online.de Simone Frey and Tim Tolsdorff talk about their motives.

t-online.de: Who exactly is behind your initiative?

Simone Frey and Tim Tolsdorff: We are a private initiative of parents who work with daycare centers. We have been working for the last five weeks and at the same time we take care of, cook, train and play with young people at home. We are frustrated by the vague plans to open nurseries announced last week. At first we were seven initiators, the idea for an open letter came from Simone Frey. Through our private networks, the number of followers grew rapidly in the range of three and finally four figures.

What is your intention

Firstly: we take the disease very seriously and make a constant “social distancing”. At the same time, we have the feeling that educational and family policy lost the opportunity to develop solid and at the same time implementable concepts to get out of the blockade. The difficult to convey, or poorly conveyed, determination of August 1 as the opening date of the nursery in Berlin is the result of this policy.

What are your demands on Ms. Giffey and politics?

We would like a clearer perspective to be opened regarding daycare openings. For example, there are existential questions for single parents. In kindergarten? Can not? To grandparents? The child should not. Help from babysitting or childcare? Not there either. We could imagine that there is a phased plan to open up. This should take the interests of children, educators and parents into account in a pragmatic way, for example through smaller group childcare and limited childcare times. That would help many parents.

Do you believe that these requirements observe the necessary safety precautions against the spread of the coronavirus?

We believe that this is possible. To date, nurseries have not been noted as a focus of infection. Of course, hygiene must play an important role, both in the supply of materials and in the practice of rituals. We believe that a gradual opening from an epidemiological point of view could be accompanied. This procedure may include tests. And, of course, the withdrawal of steps in case of infections.

Did you seek medical advice for your suggestions?

No But we want to give ourselves, the normal parents of kindergarten children, a voice in the social debate about the way out of the crown blockade. All this with common sense and openness to the argument of the other.

Thank you for the interview!
