Old podcast republished: Merkel’s unusual warning

A week ago, the chancellor urgently asked for help in the fight against the crown on her podcast, and received criticism for it. The situation has not improved since then. That is why Merkel repeated the podcast.

By Andreas Reuter, ARD capital studio

A podcast with two chancellors: First Angela Merkel is sitting at her desk with an orange jacket, two flags and a painting in the background. Then he stands in wine red in front of a blue media wall with a federal eagle. The Chancellor herself makes the transition: “And so the podcast from last Saturday continues again.”

So this time it’s not a mistake, it’s not a swapped tape, like in 1986, when television just ran Helmut Kohl’s New Years speech from the previous year. Angela Merkel is doing it today with every intention: “I know you really expect politicians to keep inventing new words. But for me what I told you last week still applies word for word.”

“Stay at home”

But now it is even more urgent: The pandemic situation will have worsened in a week, says Merkel. Now there are many more places with such a high number of infections that health authorities can no longer follow up on contacts. Therefore, I would be happy if one or the other listened to your podcast from the previous week or saw it from friends who are new to it.

“Meet significantly fewer people, either outside or at home,” the Chancellor appealed last week. “I ask that you refrain from any travel that is not really necessary. Any celebration that is not really necessary. Please stay home whenever possible, whenever possible.”

The number of new infections nearly doubled in a week

The Chancellor obviously also wanted to cheer. And that’s why he says in his new introduction: “We are not powerless against the virus. Our behavior determines how strongly and how quickly it spreads.” Staying together and sticking to the rules is the most effective way to fight the pandemic. And that is more important now than ever, Merkel said a week ago, and again today. “Now we are facing difficult months. What will winter be like, what will our Christmas be like, will be decided in the coming days and weeks.”

Since then, seven of these crucial days have passed. When Merkel first uttered this phrase, the number of new infections for the day was 7,830. Today it is almost double: 14,714.
