reElected President Joe Biden plans to appoint California Attorney General Xavier Becerra as Minister of Health. News agencies report that Reuters Y AP citing people familiar with the matter. The New York Times previously reported that Biden wanted to nominate California’s current attorney general and attorney general for the position that has a particularly heavy responsibility in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Becerra was the first Latino to be sworn in as California Attorney General in 2017. Previously, he was a member of the United States House of Representatives for 24 years. The 62-year-old had also been traded as a possible candidate for the Department of Justice or the position of Attorney General of the United States.
Biden had promised to form the most diverse cabinet of all time. Becerra was elected after the Congressional Hispanic Affairs Committee criticized Biden for not nominating too few Latinos for important positions.
As California attorney general, Becerra led the efforts of several US states and the capital, Washington, to advocate for President Barack Obama’s health care reform. The Republicans wanted to overturn this in court. With “Obamacare”, about 20 million citizens gained access to health insurance. A central point of the reform is that people can no longer be denied insurance due to prior illnesses.
Preserving Obamacare is one of the main concerns of Biden, who was Obama’s vice president. During the election campaign, he promised, among other things, to build reforms and reduce health care costs for Americans. If Becerra is approved as health minister by the Senate, he will play a key role in Biden’s cabinet. The president-elect has made the fight against the pandemic one of his priorities.
