OB election in Stuttgart: Alliance against CDU fails | Stuttgart

They negotiated for hours, but in the end, four OB candidates from the first ballot could not agree on a common candidate. Now it is clear: the next OB will not be green.

The joint document of the Stuttgart OB candidates Veronika Kienzle (Greens), Martin Körner (SPD), Hannes Rockenbauch (SÖS / Linke) and Marian Schreier (independent) provided an essential point for the new term of the mayor. This is reported by the “Stuttgarter Zeitung”. Consequently, the newspaper available to the newspaper contained nine subject areas with innovations, including the areas of sustainable mobility and housing. According to the report, it was not signed.

In addition to an annual ticket of 365 euros in local public transport, by 2035 a bicycle share of 25% in urban traffic or a positive climate balance should have been achieved. Furthermore, according to the “Stuttgarter Zeitung”, the program foresees, among other things, that the city will only sell land in exceptional cases and renounce rent increases for eight years.

Screamers and rock belly compete again

The green candidate, Veronika Kienzle, told the newspaper that they could agree on the program, but not on the candidate. She herself had withdrawn her candidacy on Wednesday afternoon, unlike Rockenbauch (SÖS / Linke) and the non-party Schreier. With her as the third candidate, she doesn’t see any chance of an eco-social majority against CDU applicant Frank Nopper, Kienzle said. Knowing that three politically similar candidates would have competed too much with each other.

At first, she did not want to make a recommendation for Rockenbauch or Schreier, who will run on the second ballot on November 29. “It is too early to make an electoral recommendation,” said the green politician. In terms of content, there are great overlays with the belly of the skirt. With Schreier, she couldn’t assess whether her statements were just lip service, Kienzle said.

Rockenbauch criticizes Schreier

Rockenbauch told the German Press Agency that during the talks it had not been possible to record the content in a binding way. Nor was there a will to back down in favor of a compromise candidate. Rockenbauch mentioned the independent plaintiff Marian Schreier by name.

He was positive about the election. “I am very confident that I will come out of the election successfully,” said Schreier. “There is a relatively conservative offer and a relatively left offer. But I am of the opinion that voters want a progressive offer in the political center.” You don’t think in terms of camps though.

In addition to the screaming and rock belly, the CDU candidate, Frank Nopper, who received the most votes in the first ballot, is also running. “The Stuttgart OB election campaign seems to be turning into an election campaign full of surprises and curiosities. I am in awe of the current developments,” he said. The SPD candidate, Martin Körner, withdrew immediately after the first vote.

The State Transport Minister regrets the withdrawal of Kienzle

Meanwhile, Baden-Württemberg Transport Minister Winfried Hermann (Greens) regretted that it had not been possible to agree on Veronika Kienzle, who came in second, as a joint candidate. In his opinion, only a joint candidate has a chance against the CDU candidate, Nopper. He found it understandable, but also regretted that his party colleague was no longer running, Hermann told the SWR. “It’s really not pleasant for the Greens how it went. But sometimes you have to see that the situation is desperate.”

“I would have liked to see her here as mayor because she represents a modern Stuttgart,” the leader of the Greens parliamentary group, Andreas Schwarz, told SWR. But there was probably no interest in an eco-social alliance, even with the other candidates.

The Stuttgart district Greens association also regretted that no agreement had been reached with the other parties. In this complicated situation, Kienzle has shown that she has all the qualities that distinguish a very good mayor for the state capital, Stuttgart, according to a statement.

Thursday: the electoral committee decides on the applications

For the second ballot, which is also known as the new election, previous applications could be withdrawn until Wednesday at 6 p.m. New applications could also be submitted at this time. The Stuttgart municipal electoral committee will decide on these applications at a public meeting on Thursday in the town hall. According to the city administration, new applicants need 250 signatures, a certificate of eligibility, and an affidavit that they will not be excluded from eligibility.
