Crucial introduced new PCIe SSDs with NVMe in the M.2 form factor. The Crucial P5 SSD is the most powerful model from the Micron subsidiary to date and must read data up to 3,400 MB / s and write up to 3,000 MB / s. The previously leaked Crucial P2 SSD is also official.
Crucial P5 at the limit of PCIe 3, others are further away
Crucial had recently boarded the NVMe SSD train with the P1 SSD in October 2018, while the competition has long had matching models in its portfolio. While the P1 serves the mainstream with cheap but slow QLC memory, the P5 is aimed at enthusiasts. However, sequential transfer speeds of up to 3,400 MB / s via PCIe 3.0 x4 are no longer the best performance, because there are already PCIe 4.0 SSDs reaching 5,000 MB / s. It is even said that Samsung’s latest 980 Pro reached 6,500 MB / s. It’s surprising that Crucial doesn’t trust PCIe 4.0 right away, as the manufacturer had previously announced its own PCIe 4.0 SSD.
Crucial lost the connection to the superior performance class with the P5, at least for sequential performance. However, other factors such as latency, throughput, and random transfer performance also play a role: Testing will show where the Crucial P5 is located.
In the M.2-2280 format, the P5 series offers 250GB, 500GB, 1TB, or 2TB of storage space, depending on the model. The 250GB model writes data at a maximum of 1,400MB / s, while sequential transfer rates should be identical for the rest of the portfolio. Also, the maximum write throughput only applies to data in the SLC pseudo cache, which Crucial calls “Dynamic Write Acceleration”, as its size dynamically adapts to the free space on the data medium, as is the case with various other Crucial SSDs.
Information is not provided in the driver datasheet and NAND flash memory. However, based on product images, at least memory like Micron’s 3D TLC NAND may be exposed. The Crucial P5 is specified with 150 TB to 1,200 TB of Total Written Bytes (TBW), the warranty period is 5 years. The product pages also mention data encryption, but there are no prices yet.
Crucial P2 is official
At the same time, Crucial introduced the P2, a new conventional SSD with NVMe technology, about which much information had already been leaked beforehand. Despite its name, P2 is not a direct successor to P1 and fundamentally differs in the use of TLC instead of QLC memory. Equipped with a DRAM-free Phison E13T controller, the M.2 SSD should reach a maximum of 2,300 MB / s via PCIe 3.0 x4. While only models with a storage volume of 250GB and 500GB were previously known, Crucial is now announcing a 1TB model.
The Crucial P2 has already hit stores in smaller versions and currently costs 65 euros (250 GB) and 70 euros (500 GB), giving it double the storage space for a small additional charge.
