Increase in the number of cases

Cities in NRW toughen crown rules
Remscheid In Remscheid, citizens must now wear mouth and nose protection throughout the city. Other NRW municipalities are also drawing conclusions from the increase in the number of infections.
Due to the increasing number of cases, the city of Remscheid significantly tightened its protective measures against the crown on Monday. “We recommend that citizens wear a mask everywhere in the city,” said department head Thomas Neuhaus, head of the crisis team. The city does not have any legal right to issue a mask requirement. “But we believe in the efficacy of the mask,” Neuhaus said.
Since the end of last week, the number of infections has increased considerably in some cities in North Rhine-Westphalia, including Gelsenkirchen, Hamm and Cologne. In Remscheid, the seven-day incidence is 37.05, and therefore above the first intervention threshold of the Crown Protection Ordinance.
Cities and municipalities with an incidence of seven days (infections in the last seven days per 100,000 inhabitants) greater than 35 must coordinate countermeasures with the responsible state authorities. From a value of 50, additional protection measures are mandatory.
In Gelsenkirchen, where the incidence value is 44.1, the number of guests for celebrations has now been limited from 150 to 50. The city also called on its citizens to only hold celebrations with a maximum of 25 participants in their homes. In view of the infection situation in the city, it is not yet clear whether the first home game of Bundesliga football club FC Schalke 04 will be played in front of the fans on Saturday.
The warning level was also exceeded in Cologne. There, Mayor Henriette Reker (non-partisan) appealed to the population to wear masks. This is particularly true in “pedestrian zones and places where many people are”. This also included queues in front of restaurants or retail stores, Reker said.
Meanwhile, virologist Christian Drosten came out in favor of specific restrictions rather than closures. “Of course, you don’t always need a regional or Germany-wide blockade because you already know some things better,” said the professor de Charité.
Hamm in Westphalia currently has the highest incidence value in NRW at 70.9. Holding a wedding there likely caused a significant increase in numbers. According to the city, 86 acutely infected people are assigned to this event. The Lord Mayor of Hamm, Thomas Hunsteger-Petermann (CDU), said the second Corona wave hit “with all severity”.
Private celebrations with more than 25 participants must now register with city authorities, and the number of spectators is limited to 150 for sporting events. Other measures cannot be ruled out, Hunsteger-Petermann said, citing restrictions on contact in public as an example. However, they want to avoid a complete lockdown.
Meanwhile, an awareness campaign is starting in Remscheid: all parents of children in schools and kindergartens receive express mail advising them to pay more attention to hygiene rules. The background for this is the knowledge that the virus is transported mainly to the facilities by children whose relatives return from risk areas such as the Balkans or Turkey. Seven schools and a kindergarten are currently affected by the quarantine measures in Remscheid.
