The disqualification of tournament favorite Novak Djokovic at the US Open has shaken the tennis world. “Djokovic is losing his nerve. His expulsion makes the already strange US Open even weirder,” commented the “New York Times”.
The 33-year-old world number one hit a linesman in his round of 16 match against Spaniard Pablo Carreño Busta with a score of 5: 6 in the first set with a ball he had knocked down after one play. The linesman then came down, Djokovic looked scared and went over to her.
“This whole situation left me really sad and empty,” Djokovic wrote on Instagram and apologized to the linesman: “I’m so sorry I caused you so much stress. It was so unintentional and so wrong.”
