For days the employee of the South Korean Ministry of Fisheries was missing, now there is official confirmation: the man was shot by North Korean soldiers. Pyongyang apologized for the shooting near the maritime border. According to the South Korean government, North Korea regrets the incident. The neighboring country claims to have killed the man as part of the measures taken in the fight against the corona virus, said the South Korean National Security Advisor.

The ruler of North Korea, Kim Jong Un, wrote to the President of South Korea, Moon Jae-in. In it he wrote that the incident should not have happened. According to South Korean media reports, Kim’s announcement also said that he was very sorry for disappointing President Moon Jae-in.

The soldiers had shot the man, assuming he was an intruder. The incident occurred on Tuesday. The Fisheries Ministry official had suddenly disappeared from his boat while on patrol near the sea border.

Indications that officials wanted to go to North Korea

The South Korean military said on Thursday that North Korean soldiers had shot at the ministerial official who had been missing for a few days. Then they would have burned his body, presumably to prevent a crown outbreak. There are indications that the man wanted to flood north after he disappeared from a fishing boat near the controversial border between the two states on Monday.

Tensions between the two Korean states have risen significantly since the failure of a summit meeting between North Korean ruler Kim and US President Donald Trump in February last year. Since then, negotiations between the United States and North Korea on dismantling the North Korean nuclear program have been on hold.
