The federal government has declared regions in eleven EU countries as corona risk areas and is now warning against traveling there. These include regions that directly border Germany in the Czech Republic and Austria, as well as the capitals of Denmark, Portugal and Ireland: Copenhagen, Lisbon, and Dublin.
In total, 14 of the 27 EU member states are now, at least partially, re-designated as risk areas. The Federal Foreign Office has updated the travel advisories on its home page.
Try 48 hours before or after entry
Travelers returning from risk areas must undergo corona tests 48 hours before or after entry and then remain in quarantine until the result is obtained. The travel warning is not a ban, but it is intended to have a significant deterrent effect. At the same time, it offers an advantage for consumers: it allows travelers to cancel reservations for free.
In Denmark, Portugal, Ireland and Slovenia, regions have been declared risk zones for the first time due to the rapid increase in the number of infections. Additional areas were added in France, Czech Republic, Netherlands, Croatia, Romania, Austria and Hungary.
Border regions

In the negotiations with Berlin, exceptions were achieved for commuters, truck drivers and travelers in transit. “We continue to negotiate on so-called small border traffic, that is, possible exceptions for people who live directly at the border,” said the Social Democrat.
It is estimated that around 37,000 Czech travelers work in Germany, mainly in the catering and health sectors. In Bavaria, the so-called entry quarantine regulation states that travelers from abroad do not have to be quarantined if they do not regularly stay abroad for more than 48 hours and do not show any symptoms. It is valid until October 3.
Capitals are usually access points
The coronavirus is spreading with particular force in metropolitan areas. In Denmark, Hovedstaden is now also around the capital. Copenhagen the first region to be designated as a risk area. Of Germany’s eight neighboring countries, only two remain without a risk zone: Luxembourg and Poland. After the outbreak of the corona pandemic, the federal Foreign Office issued a world travel advisory for tourist travel for the first time on March 17. It was initially raised again in mid-June for more than 30 European countries. After a few weeks, the travel advisories for the first countries had to be reactivated due to the increasing number of infections.
More than half of the EU countries are now affected. However, Spain remains the only Member State that has been fully declared a risk zone. The classification usually takes place if the number of new corona infections exceeds the mark of 50 cases per 100,000 population in seven days. There may also be other reasons for a travel warning, such as entry bans or lack of hygiene measures.
