Netherlands: why Willem-Alexander and Máxima apologize to people

reThe Dutch royal couple apologized to people after the violent outrage over their holiday trip to Greece despite Crown restrictions in their own country. King Willem-Alexander (53) regretted in a joint video message with his wife Máxima (49) that they had violated the trust of citizens and the decision to go on vacation.

He and his wife would continue to defend their country in the Corona crisis, he said at the embassy on Wednesday. “We remain involved, but we are not infallible.” It is very unusual for the king to address the people directly with a personal message.

The royal family had canceled their Greek vacation on Saturday after some 24 hours after the Dutch’s angry reactions to the trip despite the partial lockdown at home. Just a few days earlier, the government had urgently warned all citizens to stay home and not travel.
