northFollowing his execution, Iranian fighter Navid Afkari was buried Sunday night under strict security precautions. Human rights activist Mehdi Mahmudian, who is also a friend of the Afkaris family, announced it on Twitter.
According to Mahmudian, Afkari was buried in Sangar, a village in the Fars province of southern Iran. His family were not allowed to attend the funeral.

Afkari, 27, was executed Saturday at Adel-Abad prison in Shiraz, southern Iran, despite international protests. According to the Iranian judiciary, Afkari had killed a security officer during a demonstration in Shiraz in 2018. He was said to have confessed. The athlete, his family and human rights organizations alleged that the confession was obtained through torture.
Even a wave of domestic and foreign solidarity could not induce Iran to rethink. Afkaris’s execution has sparked angry protests on social media in Iran.
Pompeo sentenced to execution
The United States strongly condemned Afkari’s execution. “The execution of Navid Afkari by the Iranian regime is a brutal and cruel act. We condemn it in the strongest terms,” wrote US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Twitter.

“It is a heinous assault on human dignity, even by the disgusting standards of this regime. The voices of the Iranian people will not be silenced. ” Pompeo went on to say that, along with Afkari’s family and all Iranians, they mourned the athlete who had been killed by a “brutal and ruthless regime.”
IOC President Thomas Bach had previously sent a letter to Iran’s political leaders asking for clemency, even if he respected the country’s sovereignty. It is “deeply disturbing” that all the protests by athletes and the efforts of international associations have failed. “We are devastated,” read a message from the IOC Athletes Commission.
Alfons Hörmann, president of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, was also shocked by Afkari’s death: “We do not understand that the sentence was carried out without granting the accused a fair trial as one of the fundamental human rights.”
Sports association calls for the exclusion of Iran
Meanwhile, the international sports association “Global Athlete” demands sanctions for world sport for Iran. The International Olympic Committee and the World Wrestling Federation would have to ban Iran from the international sports arena because of this “heinous execution,” it said in a statement from the Athletes’ Union.
The Iranian government has violated human rights and this must not go unpunished. Iran should no longer enjoy the privilege of participating in international competitions.
The human rights organization Amnesty International also joined the call for consequences. The secret execution of the fighter “after an unfair trial is a mockery of justice and demands immediate international action,” said an Amnesty statement.
