At halftime it was 3-0 for Spain: the German soccer team suffered a heavy defeat at the end of the year. The DFB team would only have needed a draw to celebrate the group win in the Nations League and qualify for the final round. But it turned out very different.

Spain beat the almost unlikely German team 6-0 (3-0) and will play for the Nations League title next year. Álvaro Morata (minute 17), Ferrán Torres with three goals (33/55/71), Rodri (38) and Mikel Oyarzabal (89) scored for the locals.

Spain finished group A4 with eleven points ahead of Germany (9). The parallel match between Ukraine and Switzerland had to be canceled due to a positive corona test on the Ukrainian team. It is not yet clear how the game will be scored and whether Switzerland, currently last in the group (6), should be relegated.

The appearance of the DFB team in Spain started off happily. Ilkay Gündogan fouled Dani Olmo just inside the box, but referee Andreas Ekberg called a free kick in front of the box. Manuel Neuer stopped Sergio Ramos’ shot (5th), but Spain remained the superior team. Fabián Ruiz shot at the far post from the right corner. Forward Álvaro Morata beat Serge Gnabry and hit his head from a few meters to make it 1-0 (17th).

Germany repeatedly had problems with the allocation of centers for the Spaniards and thus took two more hits. After Olmo’s header to the crossbar, Ferrán Torres hit the sidelines to make it 2-0 (33rd). Five minutes later, Rodri headed in the third goal (38), again from a Fabian corner. The DFB team largely left the ball to Spain, remained very low and showed little initiative.

Spain plays brio

That didn’t change in the second half either. Spain continued to play with momentum. As a result of quick attacks, Torres (55th / 71st) increased with two goals to 5-0, Fabían making his third assist. At the time, the statistics counted 20 degrees from the Spanish and only one from the DFB team. Only in the 78th minute did Serge Gnabry get the best chance with a shot off the crossbar. In the last stages, Oyarzabal scored the sixth goal (89th).

Winter break begins for the German national team. The next international matches are scheduled between March 22 and 31, when qualification for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will begin. Groups will be drawn on December 7.

The final tournament of the Nations League will take place from October 6 to 10, 2021. France is also qualified for the final phase, on Wednesday Italy and Belgium, leaders of the other groups, could do the same. Portugal can no longer qualify and consequently cannot defend its title.
