National Test – Warntag2020: Authorities Trigger Test Alarm – Warning App Partially Overloaded

For the first time since reunification, a nationwide test alarm went off today at 11 a.m. It appears that not all went well. In some areas, for example, the central NINA warning app failed. At noon, the head of the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Assistance (BBK), Christoph Unger, wants to comment on the test alarm.

The so-called warning day serves as preparation for dangerous situations such as severe storms, floods, chemical accidents or terrorist attacks. All existing warning devices such as warning applications, radio and television, digital billboards, sirens and speaker trucks must be integrated.

In Cologne, for example, the sirens sounded at 11 am sharp. “The go-ahead will be sent at 11:20 am,” said the Federal Office for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief (BBK) before the start of the campaign. Ntv.de also participated in the exercise.

A BBK spokeswoman said with a glance at the NINA warning app: “We know it partially worked.” In some cases, however, the modular alert system was also overloaded. “That’s why there are currently activation delays.” According to the Berlin “Tagesspiegel”, the NINA warning app has failed in the capital and also in Potsdam.

The test alarm, which is conducted jointly by the federal and state governments, will take place every second Thursday in September. The BBK pursues two objectives: on the one hand, the alert technology must be tested and, on the other hand, citizens must become familiar with the various alert technologies. Because it has been shown that people in crisis situations mostly turn to familiar things, said BBK president Christoph Unger.
