Nagorno-Karabakh conflict: apparently the attack on Pashinyan was thwarted

[ad_1]

Following the ceasefire negotiated with Azerbaijan through Russian mediation, the Prime Minister of Armenia, Pashinyan, has come under fire. He is often accused of treason. Apparently there were even concrete plans to attack him now.

By his own account, the Armenian security services foiled an attack on Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. The NSS said that three people had been arrested.

A cache of weapons was also said to have been unearthed. According to this, an attack on Pashinyan and a “subsequent takeover” was planned, as this group did not agree with the internal and foreign policy of the head of government. Among those arrested are former NSS chief Artur Vanetsjan and former Republican parliamentary leader Vahram Baghdasarjan.

Strong criticism of Pashinyan

Prime Minister Pashinyan has been criticized by numerous Armenians after agreeing to a ceasefire in the Nagorno-Karabakh enclave. In protests against his decision, he was also labeled a traitor.

Armenia and Azerbaijan had fought heavy fighting in Nagorno-Karabakh for weeks. Most Armenian Christians live there. Under international law, the South Caucasus region belongs to the majority of Islamic Azerbaijan, which it renounced in 1991.

Mediated by Russia, a ceasefire was negotiated earlier this week to end the fighting. The agreement states that both Nagorno-Karabakh countries can keep the areas over which they currently have control. This means heavy losses for Armenia, as Azerbaijan was able to conquer much of the southern Caucasus region during weeks of fighting.

Residents set fire to houses

Armenian residents set their houses on fire in the village of Charektar in the Kalbajar district of Nagorno-Karabakh. Dozens of residents in and around the village had already started setting fire to their own houses on Friday. Compared to the AFP news agency, one of the Armenians justified this action by saying that the houses should not fall into the hands of Azerbaijani soldiers.

In the capital Yerevan, many citizens have taken to the streets for days to protest against the compromise and demand the resignation of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan.
