The state government is relaxing previously strict rules for vacationers in German crown risk areas. The long quarantine is no longer necessary. In the future, one test will suffice instead of two.

Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania is relinquishing its course on the so-called accommodation ban for guests from Corona’s risk areas. After weeks of disputes and a few days before an expected court ruling, the state government and the tourism industry agreed to a compromise on Saturday. For vacationers in the Northeast, a negative corona test no longer than 48 hours is sufficient starting next Wednesday. Quarantine of at least five days and a second subsequent test are no longer required. Therefore, the state is aligning its rules with those of Schleswig-Holstein, Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) said on Saturday.

Previously massive criticism of strict rules

The quarantine requirement for vacationers has so far only applied in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The regulation was the strictest nationwide and had drawn massive criticism. Prime Minister Schwesig, in view of the increasing number of new infections in the for a long time Sonderweg passed, but has now given in to negative rulings about the accommodation ban in several other federal states. After the prime minister’s meeting with Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) last Wednesday, Schwesig had promised a relaxation, but attached conditions.

New rules apply from Wednesday

The new rules should go into effect next Wednesday. State Health Minister Harry Glawe (CDU) once again called on guests to comply with applicable hygiene rules. Anyone who feels sick or has typical corona symptoms, such as a cough, fever or taste disturbances, should go to the doctor and get tested, Glawe says. Tourists from risk areas are still required to present a current negative corona test upon arrival. However, the rules for returnees from foreign risk areas will not change. Daytime tourists from risk areas cannot come to Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania either.

Urgent requests against state ordinance filed

Last week, three urgent motions against the state ordinance were presented to the High Administrative Court in Greifswald. Originally, the court wanted to make a decision on this in the next week. It was not clear at first whether the applications could be withdrawn. According to the tourism industry, the entry regulations for visitors to Corona hotspots in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania amounted to an accommodation ban.

Hoteliers complain about falling sales

The regional tourism association and the German hotel and restaurant association welcomed the change of course. He has harshly criticized the previous regulation. The industry, which was on the rise again in the summer season after the crown-related full stop of travel in the spring in the Northeast, suffered a setback in the fall. The managing director of the regional tourism association, Tobias Woitendorf, spoke of losses of up to 30 percent. This corresponds to an expected revenue of up to € 80 million, which hoteliers had strongly expected. Furthermore, it is difficult for individual accommodation operators to keep an eye on all the new risk areas and not even let the corresponding tourists arrive. Tourists were absent from Berlin, in particular, because the number of infections in the federal capital at the beginning of the autumn holidays surpassed the critical mark of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in a week. Even from other risk areas in Germany, vacationers stayed away despite early bookings.

Many accommodation bans have been dropped

The controversial accommodation ban for travelers from high-risk areas in the interior of Germany only applies in a few federal states. In most of them it was discontinued or not introduced at all. In Hamburg, tourists from German risk zones must confirm in writing that they have not been to a German risk zone in the last 14 days. Otherwise, you must submit a negative test. In Saxony-Anhalt the same regulation applies as for tourists from foreign areas with corona risk, unless they can present a negative test that is not more than two days old. The same applies to Schleswig-Holstein.
