The first went like this: In late April, it was announced that Defense Minister and CDU President Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer wanted to buy Boeing F-18 bombers suitable for nuclear weapons. Purpose of purchase: One day, planes should be able to carry American nuclear weapons. “Nuclear participation” means that in German NATO.

This was not discussed with the Social Democrats, so Mützenich opposed it. In coordination with party leader Norbert Walter-Borjans, he immediately reported that the F-18 was out of the question. However, since he was familiar with the thought patterns of the German peace movement throughout his political life, Mützenich added another demand: Nuclear participation must stop and with it the parking of American atomic bombs in Germany.
