Murdered and dismembered woman
Outstanding historian has to go to a prison camp

The fact is cruel, the punishment severe: a famous Russian historian is sent to a prison camp for a long time. Oleg Sokolov, 64, was arrested last year when he tried to sink his friend’s body parts into the Moika River.

A 64-year-old Russian historian has been sentenced to a very long prison term in St. Petersburg for killing and dismembering a young student. The internationally known expert on Napoleon Oleg Sokolow has to be in a prison camp for twelve years and six months, according to the judges of the state agency Tass. Prosecutors had asked for 15 years in prison for murder and illegal possession of weapons.

Therefore, the judges considered it proven that the teacher killed the 24-year-old woman with whom he lived in November of last year out of jealousy. According to the investigation, the man shot the student, strangled her and dismembered her body. Sokolov was arrested while drunk in November 2019 while attempting to sink body parts into the Moika River.

Police pulled the then 63-year-old out of the icy water and discovered a woman’s severed arms in her backpack. In his apartment, officers found a bloodstained saw and the decapitated body of his former student Anastasia Yeshchenko. Sokolov had lived with the 24-year-old and wrote several books.

Transformed into a “monster”

The scientist from St. Petersburg State University had confessed to the fact. His defense attorneys are considering appealing the verdict. The case made news beyond Russia. The historian Oleg Sokolow had repeatedly appeared in Napoleon’s costume and recreated historical battles.

He justified the bloody act by saying that the young woman turned into a “monster” and drove him crazy. Other women also accused the teacher of violent assault. The prosecutor had demanded 15 years in prison in the process. The defenders, however, pleaded for eight years. The scientist said he wanted to be “punished” for what happened.
