Murder of a child in the kindergarten in court
Did the educator crush Greta to death?

Time and again similar incidents occur in the nurseries where a certain teacher works. Children put their lives in danger because they suffer respiratory arrest. Children can be saved over and over again, but three-year-old Greta from Viersen cannot. Now begins the trial against the educator.

Due to the violent death of a kindergarten child in Viersen, North Rhine-Westphalia, an educator must answer to the regional court in Mönchengladbach. The prosecutor charged the defendant with murder and mistreatment of the wards in nine cases. In April, little Greta suffered a respiratory arrest at the Viersen nursery. According to the Prosecutor’s Office, this was caused by the educator.

The 25-year-old from Geldern is said to have squeezed the girl’s chest while she slept until she stopped breathing and thus squeezed her to death. The emergency doctor was able to revive the boy, but he died days later at the clinic. The treating doctor became suspicious and found traces that indicated violence. Thus began the case. According to the prosecution, the act took place on the last scheduled working day of the kindergarten teacher because the Viersen nursery had notified her at the end of the month.

According to the prosecution, the educator worked in kindergartens in Krefeld, Kempen, Tönisvorst and Viersen, among others. Since August 2017, she is said to have squeezed children’s chests in these nurseries until they became short of breath or a respiratory arrest. She “at least accepted the death of the children.”

Incidents over and over

In a kindergarten in Krefeld, according to the indictment, the educator squeezed the chest of a child born in 2014 four times so hard that it no longer responded. In one case, the boy shrugged his shoulders and legs and bled from his mouth.

At a kindergarten in Kempen, he is said to have abused a child born in 2016 in the same way in four cases. As a result, the boy suffered from shortness of breath to respiratory arrest and cramps. According to the prosecutor, the defendant squeezed the chest of a kindergarten boy with a congenital heart defect in Tönisvorst in October 2019 until the girl turned blue and lost consciousness.

After his actions, he pointed out to his colleagues about the condition of the respective children and began rescue measures. As a result, all of the children except Greta would have survived. According to the prosecutor, several superiors and colleagues described the 25-year-old as “unsuitable for the profession of educator.” The defendant was “unemotional and indifferent” with the children. A psychiatric examination of the educator was arranged.

Obviously inappropriate

The Viersen case had caused horror across the country in the spring. After the case became known, the Family Minister of North Rhine-Westphalia, Joachim Stamp, announced a “full and transparent investigation”.

On the state parliament’s committee for family, children and youth, Lorenz Bahr, head of the state youth welfare office, reported on a series of emergency medical missions in daycare centers where the alleged teacher was on duty. Already in 2018, it quickly became clear to those responsible that the young woman could not be alone with the children. At the time, Bahr reported that there was a recommendation not to admit her at the colloquium. However, he got a job in several daycare centers.

In the Mönchengladbach trial, Greta’s mother and two of the allegedly injured children appear as joint plaintiffs. The process will take place before a jury court and will initially run until March 2021.
