Dozens of people fight in the square, some with police. The situation reaches a critical point, there is a large-scale operation and injuries.

After a massive fight and fights with law enforcement officers, a large number of police officers completely cleared the Stachus on Friday night. Up to 75 officers were on duty, a spokesman reported late at night. There were injuries, it is not yet clear how many. The police also used batons. The Stachus and several adjacent streets were closed for about an hour.

According to the police, around 50 people fought in the square around 7:30 p.m. When police arrived, the violence was also directed against officers, the spokesman said. As a result, reinforcements were called in and when the situation reached a critical point, a decision was made to vacate the site entirely. The situation can be summarized as follows: “a lot of people, a confusing situation, a high potential for aggression”. Police estimate that around 150 people were more or less involved in the clashes. In the Stachus, in the late afternoon, you could see mainly young people, mostly between 16 and 25 years old.

The actual evacuation from the square was largely peaceful, most of those present behaving “cooperatively,” the spokesman said. Before, however, there were not only brawls, but also “acts of resistance” against police officers. There were injuries on both sides, but he is not aware of serious injuries.

Police officers, including officers from the Support Command (USK), cleared the scene; in such cases we speak of “room security”. Access to the pedestrian zone from Stachus was temporarily cordoned off, as were parts of Sonnenstrasse and Josephspitalstrasse. Firefighters and rescuers were also on duty. Around 9:30 pm, these closures were lifted after the situation had evidently calmed down.

In recent days and weeks there have been more problems at Stachus, the spokesman said; He also spoke of larger meetings. Apparently young people would have met there who would otherwise have met at Gärtnerplatz or on the Isar. However, there has been a weekend ban on alcohol for four weeks, unlike Stachus.
