Müller prevails against Chebli – politics

Berlin Mayor Michael Müller will run for the Bundestag. In the internal SPD struggle for the candidacy, Müller prevailed over Sawsan Chebli, who also wanted to run in the Berlin district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf. However, the majority of the 2,500 SPD members in the district voted for the mayor online and by letter. “I will fully support Michael Müller,” Chebli said. In the last two federal elections, the direct mandate in the district went to the CDU.

The candidate for the fight made headlines throughout the country. Chebli, who was brought to the Red City Hall by Müller as secretary of state, is primarily committed to civil rights, equality and the fight against the law. Müller applied for topics such as rentals and housing, and as mayor he made a special contribution to Berlin as a scientific site.

The differences between the two Social Democrats could hardly be greater

Even beyond their central themes, the differences between the two Social Democrats could not be greater. Chebli, 42, is Muslim and her parents fled the Palestinian territories to Berlin. He regularly puts his immigration history at the center of his political arguments, which he spreads widely on Twitter. Müller, 55, on the other hand, is a politician in fact, personal matters are quite alien to politics.

The competition for the Bundestag mandate has occupied the Berlin SPD for months. Müller had already announced his departure from the party presidency throughout the year in January, but then left open for a long time how he imagines his departure as mayor of the government. When he finally wanted to run for the Bundestag in his home district of Tempelhof-Schöneberg, the popular Juso boss Kevin Kühnert had already announced his candidacy there.

It is already clear who Müller would like to inherit in the town hall

Müller then started in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, the district is run by its head of state chancery. Sawsan Chebli had expressed an interest in running for a long time before. Shortly after Müller revealed himself, he also announced his candidacy in Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf.

If Müller had lost the competition for the Bundestag candidacy, it would have been his political end. His top-party successors will be elected at the SPD party convention in Berlin next Saturday. This also includes the federal Minister for the Family, Franziska Giffey. In the House of Representatives elections next fall, she wants to inherit Müller as the ruling mayor.
