Moving away from manufacturer Intel: Apple installs its own chips

In the future, Apple will depend more on its own chips than before. The vendor, and now the Intel competition, won’t like that at all.

The iPhone group has presented the first three models with chips of its own development instead of Intel processors. The new semiconductor called M1, which is supposed to guarantee up to twice as long battery life, seals the departure from chip partner Intel, which has equipped Macs for nearly 15 years. Apple announced the move in June. For Macs, this is the third chip platform change after Motorola’s transition to IBM’s PowerPC in the early 1990s and Intel in 2005.

With the change, the group can also operate its Macs on the same software platform as its iPhones and iPads for the first time. The internal chip with the M1 designation combines an eight-core main processor and the graphics chip in one system.

The M1 chips are based on the architecture of the chip designer ARM, which belongs to the Japanese group Softbank, and with which iPhones and iPads also run. With this, developers can also bring iPhone applications to Macs. According to Apple’s chief software officer, Craig Federighi, applications should start much faster than before and even the most demanding programs will run smoothly. As with the iPhone, a special area is supposed to enhance image processing with machine learning, for example.

Mac programs that were originally adapted for Intel processors and have not yet been adapted for Apple chips will now be “translated” in real time.

More execution time

With the M1, Apple equips the Macbook Air, the most popular Mac model, among others. Now it works without a fan. Thanks to the cheaper chip, the battery should allow 15 hours of web browsing and 18 hours of video playback.

In addition, the more powerful Macbook Pro with 13-inch screen and the Mac Mini desktop calculator also have Apple’s new processor.

Apple is betting that the stronger technological connection between iPhone and Mac will encourage application developers to work on applications that work on both computers and smartphones. According to Federighi, Adobe has already announced that it will launch the most famous image processing program Photoshop for M1 devices early next year.

Apple is best known for its iPhones and iPads, but Mac computers also generate tens of billions of dollars in annual sales for the company. In the Corona crisis, which sparked a trend toward home offices, Mac’s revenue increased in the last quarter to $ 9 billion, which had never been reached before. Macs had a 14 percent share of the Cupertino, California group’s total sales.

All new models with the M1 chip are not externally modified. Apparently Apple wants to convey continuity over the course of massive technological change. Because one thing will definitely no longer be possible in the future. The parallel installation of the operating system Apple Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

With the new generation of chips, Apple should become much more independent from vendor Intel and can probably increase its already impressive profit margins as well.
