At Berlin’s Charité and Vivantes hospitals, nurses and other employees were called on a two-day warning strike starting early Monday.

Shortly before the third round of collective bargaining in the public sector of the federal and local government, Verdi’s union wants to put pressure on employers again.

In the morning, participation in the Charité was initially quite moderate, said Verdi’s union secretary Marco Pavlik of the dpa. Reason: There was no emergency service agreement with the clinic management, which was annoying. Therefore, workers would have to weigh whether they should go to their patients or exercise their right to strike.

By Tuesday, Verdi has also asked employees of the Berlin City Cleaning Service (BSR) to hold a full-day warning strike. Therefore, all recycling yards are likely to remain closed, and garbage collection and street cleaning will also be affected.

For a term of one year of the new collective agreement, the unions demand a salary and salary increase of 4.8 percent, but at least 150 euros more per month. Employers have offered a total of 3.5 percent more wages and salaries in three annual stages for about 2.5 million employees nationwide.

The third round of negotiations is scheduled for Thursday and Friday in Potsdam. In recent weeks there have been repeated warning strikes due to the collective bargaining dispute in Berlin, for example at the BVG, the BSR or in the municipal clinics.
