More vaccines for the EU from April
Von der Leyen promises “double”

Starting in the second trimester, there should be more vaccine doses available in the EU than before. The head of the commission, von der Leyen, expects around 100 million per month, double the amount expected for March. To do this, Germany would have to significantly expand its vaccination capabilities.

EU Commission Head Ursula von der Leyen expects the EU-wide corona vaccination campaign to accelerate significantly from April. The quantities of vaccine delivered could double again from April “according to the manufacturers’ plans, also because more vaccines are about to be approved,” he said in an interview with the “Stuttgarter Zeitung” and the “Stuttgarter Nachrichten”. She expects the delivery of around 100 million doses of vaccines per month in the second quarter.

This would mean a massive increase in the amount of vaccine available so far. Von der Leyen told newspapers that around 20 million doses of vaccine had been delivered to the EU in January and around 30 million in February. The EU expects around 50 million cans for March.

With a delivery of 100 million doses of vaccines per month in the EU, around 20 million doses would have to be delivered and vaccinated in Germany, according to the newspapers. To do this, local vaccination capacities would have to be significantly increased: according to the Robert Koch Institute, as of last Friday, only around 7.3 million vaccines had been administered in Germany since December 28.

In the interview, Von der Leyen also made hopes of traveling safely in the summer. But it is important “that everyone does their homework now,” he said, referring to the governments of the member states. The CDU politician referred to, among other things, the lack of linkage of many different Corona apps in Europe. “There are even two countries that have completely different systems and therefore cannot exchange data,” he criticized.

The EU is planning a Europe-wide vaccination pass for the summer, which will allow for vacation travel. At the EU summit in February, the EU Commission promised to guarantee the legal framework and digital link for the vaccination card within three months. “The Commission has already shown that a digital connection can be established in three months with the Covid contact tracking app,” von der Leyen said confidently.
