More tire pressure – this is how winter tires grip better

Ice and snow are not everywhere yet, but winter is coming. Winter tires are the best option now, and it will be worth applying a little more pressure later on.

If you drive on snowy and icy roads, you should always increase your tire pressure by 0.2 bar compared to the manufacturer’s specifications. That opens up the slat profile, explains the Automobile Club of Germany (AvD).

Pay attention to the weather conditions.

In this way, the winter tires grip better, the car stays safer on the track and the braking and steering behavior can also be improved. However, if it is predominantly dry or wet, you must strictly follow the manufacturer’s information on tire pressure.

From a purely legal point of view, tires approved as winter tires in Germany are only required on winter roads, because in this country there is a so-called situational winter tire requirement. But even in the cold, softer winter tires show their advantages over summer tires. According to the AvD, they also offer a safety gain on wet, slippery roads with leaves and when there is frost.
