With its 22 stalls, Lüneburg’s “Gassenzauber” is a small substitute for the Christmas market. After the first weekend, the showmen are satisfied, but the police counted many crown violations.

Unsurprisingly, many visitors and tourists flocked to the city center and the so-called stubborn areas became overcrowded after a short time, police reported Sunday. Consequently, people were crowding in front of the posts, the distances had not been maintained. Sausages and crepes were eaten throughout the city center. According to the police, many guests wore mouth and nose protection, but hardly anyone was complying with regulations in persistent areas. According to the police, the security service was overwhelmed by the large number of visitors. Most of the tourists told officials that they were unaware of the zone regulations.

District, city and showmen meet today

Showmen can’t understand criticism. There are still some places to improve, but overall the weekend was very decent, said a spokesperson for the NDR 1 Lower Saxony showmen. Today, the city, the exhibitors and the district want to discuss whether it is necessary to improve the hygiene concept for the Christmas stands in Lüneburg.

Dispute over persistent areas: no drinks sold, only food

The magic of the alley takes place under the motto “We for Lüneburg”.

Shortly before the opening of the “Gassenzauber”, the district had criticized the city’s hygiene concept, so the opening had been postponed to Saturday. The main points of contention were the housing areas. In these areas, visitors can remove their mouth and nose covers to eat and drink, despite having to wear a mask. To keep these areas from getting crowded, the city decided to completely ban the sale of drinks at stalls. According to the city, the background was that third parties had planned more deals to go in the meantime, which the city was not aware of to date, according to a message from the city. It is to be feared that the rush through the lagging areas is too great.

Actions around “street magic” planned

The “Gassenzauber” is scheduled until December 23. Specials include high-quality priced windowed Advent calendars, a fairy tale mile, light projections, and 200 Christmas trees. Artists should act too. Criticism of the simplified Christmas market comes from the catering industry. The restaurant association considers the market to be unfair to closed restaurants.
