In Mexico, at least 17 people died after consuming contaminated brandy. The administration of the Chiconcuautla municipality in the state of Puebla then declared a health emergency on Tuesday (local time). He called on the population to stop consuming or selling alcoholic beverages for the time being.
Local media reported more deaths, according to “El Sol de Puebla” 23 people are said to have died from alcohol poisoning.
Anyone who drank Refino, a type of agave spirit distilled in small amounts, and had a headache, dizziness or vomiting last weekend, should go to the nearest clinic immediately, he said.
The exact cause of the deaths is still under investigation. According to a report in the newspaper “Proceso”, those affected died of liver failure caused by ethanol.
Chiconcuautla is a poor indigenous community with approximately 17,000 inhabitants. It is located in a mountainous region about 200 kilometers northeast of Mexico City.
A similar incident also occurred in the Telixtac municipality, south of Mexico City, on Tuesday: 13 people died after eating adulterated mezcal.
