A detained Mexican drug trafficker died of a coronavirus infection. Moisés Escamilla May, one of the leaders of the feared Las Zetas cartel, succumbed to the Covid-19 lung disease hospital, the Jalisco state prosecutor said Monday. The 45-year-old man had been rushed from prison to hospital last week.

Escamilla, called El Gordo May (Fat May), had spent more than ten years in prison. He was sentenced to 37 years in prison. Escamilla was distributed among other things due to the beheading of twelve people in the state of Yucatan, in southern Mexico. Zetas are known to decapitate and dismember their enemies.

Escamilla was arrested in 2008 along with eight alleged accomplices in Cancún. It had its base of operations in the Caribbean vacation metropolis.
