In the Bundestag, Chancellor Merkel defended the strict line of the federal and state governments on crown restrictions. It was interrupted by massive boos, a tumultuous debate.

When Angela Merkel returns to her seat on the government bench, she takes a deep breath and briefly closes her eyes. He has had 25 turbulent minutes. Loud boos: tumult in the ranks of the AfD. The president of the Bundestag, Wolfgang Schäuble, had to intervene and call to order. The chancellor looks exhausted.

After Corona’s harsh resolutions yesterday with the prime minister and criticism, Merkel knows exactly: now is the time to explain: “The measures we are taking now are appropriate, necessary and proportionate. If instead, we would wait until the units of intensive care are full, then it would be too late! “

Warnings and appeal

Prevention of a health emergency, containing the virus – the Chancellor warns, appeals, thanks again to citizens and parliamentarians. And it makes it clear: a critical debate on the decided measures is correct and important. She sees this as a sign of an open society, says Merkel, and: “Lies and misinformation, conspiracies and hatred not only harm the democratic debate, but also the fight against the virus.”

AfD: dramatization of the situation

The leader of the AfD parliamentary group, Alexander Gauland, does not want to let that affect him and his party. He accuses the chancellor of dramatizing the crisis: “Fear is a bad advisor. But the daily bombardment of the number of infections apparently aims to scare people,” says Gauland, and speaks of a “kind of war propaganda.”

Gauland’s comparison is that people also die in car traffic, and there are rules in place of prohibiting all car traffic. The leader of the union parliamentary group Ralph Brinkhaus breaks his neck: “Mr. Gauland, you say that life is not that important … tell someone who has lost a close relative.”

FDP warns, SPD agrees, Greens criticize

There is a special atmosphere in the Bundestag. It is clear to all: the stakes are high. FDP chief Christian Lindner warns that the new Crown rules are not constitutional and that acceptance among citizens is declining: “So what happens if the number of cases increases again after the Christmas holidays? Then there is also the threat of the third wave in January third blockade, and then the fourth wave and the fourth blockade? “

But what is sustainable in the long term? In any case, the SPD supports the contact restrictions imposed by the federal and state governments, the leader of the parliamentary group Mützenich makes clear: “The balance between necessary interventions and assistance has been maintained.”

For the Greens, the new unity between the federal and state governments comes almost too late: after too much confusion so far, the leader of the parliamentary group Katrin Göring-Eckardt criticizes: “So the infection crisis has also turned into a Confidence crisis. And now it must be resolved with great strength and determination and unity. “

And the chancellor? He sits, wearing a mask, in his seat with his back up, listening and knowing: in two weeks he will exchange ideas with the heads of country to evaluate the drastic restrictions of the crown. Whether the November experiment will be successful or not is wide open.
