However, in particular the technical equipment and “digital possibilities” of the health authorities left much to be desired, Merkel admitted. The staff is also sometimes understaffed. For this reason, the federal and state governments have agreed on the “Pact for the Public Health Service” with a volume of four billion euros. With this, for example, 5000 new jobs will be financed.
At the conference, various health authorities, among others, were to present their ideas for further development of the public health service. Merkel expressed the hope that the event “will be an impetus to get more involved in the discussion.”
In greetings to the conference, the Prime Minister of Bavaria, Markus Söder (CSU) and the First Mayor of Hamburg, Peter Tschentscher (SPD), also praised the efforts of the health authorities. The public health service has never been “as valuable” as it is today, Söder said. “Superhuman” things had been done there in recent months.
“Just praise or applaud” would be too little, the CSU chief warned. Working conditions must be improved in a sustainable way.
Tschentscher also stressed that the public health service was doing an “excellent job” in the pandemic. Now it’s about strengthening your staff, equipping them with better technology, and also improving networking with other parts of the health system.
