After an exchange of gunfire in Meckenheim, near Bonn, there are new details about the man who was killed by a bullet. According to investigators, the 44-year-old man who was shot was said to be a shooter and had a gun possession card. In fact, he apparently carried two pistols and ammunition.
During a search, knives, machetes, an ax, a large amount of ammunition, and various long and short weapons were found; not all the weapons were listed on the property card, according to police.
The night before, residents had alerted police because the man was said to riot in the street and shoot. When a police car arrived, the shooter wounded a police officer in the hand, according to investigators.
The 44-year-old man fled to a field some 200 meters away, where officials detained him and tried to persuade him to surrender; the man refused, according to police. When special forces attacked him early Monday, there was an exchange of gunfire and the man died of his injuries while still at the scene.
Police had already announced Monday morning that there were indications that the 44-year-old had been under the influence of alcohol in the incident.
Large-scale operation in small town
In all, there were about 10 crime scenes in the residential area, the police spokesman said. It refers to places where a bullet or several projectiles hit: in a patrol car, in parked cars, on the facades of houses. There was also a hole in the window of a house.
Before the incident, the police had spoken of a “very dynamic situation” in the city of 25,000 inhabitants south of Bonn. There was a large contingent of police officers in action. According to officials, doctors and paramedics, as well as pastors, were also at the scene.
So far nothing is known about a possible motive for the crime. Bonn’s prosecution and criminal police are leading the investigation. An autopsy should now, among other things, clarify whether the man died from police bullets or whether he committed suicide.
