Mask requirement for older students in class: daycares in regular operation

Schools and kindergartens in Saxony should reopen from Monday after the holidays in normal operation. However, there are some adjustments compared to the previous practice. As announced by the Ministry of Culture on Friday evening, high school students in grades 11 and 12, as well as vocational students, are also required to wear a mask in class if distances cannot be maintained in classrooms. In the lower grades, infections among students barely played a role because the infections were brought in from outside, he said.

Mask requirement for all students outside of class

According to the ministry, all fifth grade students are required to wear a mask in the school building and on the school premises if the required distance is not possible. In elementary schools, after-school care centers and special needs schools, there is no obligation to wear a mask during or outside of class.

FFP2 masks for teachers on request

Upon request, teachers can receive an FFP2 mask. “Schools and kindergartens are comparatively safe places and not hotspots for the pandemic. We owe it to our children to keep them open as long as possible,” said Education Minister Christian Piwarz (CDU).

Regular operation in pandemic conditions

  • Obligation to wear a mouth and nose cover for all members of the school (students, teachers, other employees) in the school building and on school premises, as well as during school events (except for those grades 1-4 and after-school care)
  • if distances can be maintained, no mask requirement
  • no field trips to extracurricular learning venues
  • No events with outsiders (parents’ evenings, all-day offers)
  • Teacher offers are allowed throughout the day.
  • no student internships or class trips
  • no swimming lessons due to pool closures
  • Familiarization with parents can be done
  • Parents should not enter group rooms, access only up to the closet
  • Parents must also provide the daily child health certificate
  • Mandatory mask for parents throughout the Kita area
  • no mask required for educators and children
  • There are no events with outsiders (parents’ evenings, grandparents craft evenings, singing or reading from outside partners)

According to the Ministry of Culture, there may be restrictions on care if staff are absent due to quarantine or illness. In exceptional cases, parents would have to wait for shorter childcare times. The decision in this regard rests with the institution responsible for the installation.
