Mario Götze: The change of advisor says a lot

“Mario Götze changes to star consultant”, so read on Monday. At first I thought the story was a few weeks old.

Because it was only recently that Götze announced that from now on he would be represented by Reza Fazeli, an advisor with an impeccable reputation who also represents Dortmund coach Lucien Favre. But no: Götze changed his saddle again in a transfer phase and is now represented by Lian-Sports.

Agent changes are legitimate, in theory, players could hire a new agent every day. In Götze’s case, however, it is worth a closer look. Lian-Sports is a great agency. Besides Götze, he also represents Jerome Boateng and Leroy Sané in Germany.

But it is also a controversial agency, to which several pages of the Football Leaks book are dedicated. This recent change says a lot about Götze. You have to know that it is usually much more difficult to accommodate an average talented Youth A Bundesliga player in the regional league than it is to find a suitable club for Götze.

Unless Mario Götze’s ideas are too complicated. Either in terms of salary or the situation of the club. None of these suggest that “our World Cup hero” wants to show it off to everyone in the Bundesliga. That he is willing to take responsibility for a lower salary apart from FC Bayern or Borussia Dortmund.

Because you don’t need a change of advisor to switch to Bayer Leverkusen, Hertha BSC or Eintracht Frankfurt.

Wait a minute though: Hessen has been working closely with Lian Sports for years. Götze zur Eintracht: that would be a sensation.

As a child, Stefan Backs had a lifelong dream: he wanted to get paid to watch football all day. He finally put it into practice by studying sports journalism and working as a soccer journalist for Sport Bild and Sat.1. In 2001, Backs became Media Director of Rogon Sportmanagement GmbH. Since 2003 he has worked as an independent player advisor and has accompanied numerous transfers in professional football. In 2012 he became Managing Director of Siebert & Backs Fußballmanagement GmbH. The agency’s clients include Alexander Nübel, Ralf Fährmann and Marco Höger.
