No more speculation about Mario Götze’s new club. The 2014 world champion will play in the Netherlands in the future. According to media reports, Götze completed medical tests at PSV Eindhoven on Tuesday evening.
The club confirmed the change Tuesday night. Götze receives a two-year contract with the 24-time champion. Roger Schmidt, who coached Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and more recently Beijing Guoan in China, has been the Eredivisie runner-up’s coach since this year.
“We had good conversations and I seriously considered moving to the Netherlands afterwards,” Götze said in the official announcement. He has had some offers this summer, “but I am an emotional person and I make my own decisions. I feel ready for a new challenge and I am sure it will be a pleasant change for me,” Götze continued.
Former Bayern and BVB pro Götze had been practically unemployed since July. Dortmund had not extended their contract. Therefore, Götze’s obligation is not linked to the transfer window. The 28-year-old had no longer played a decisive role in BVB coach Lucien Favre’s plans. He only made 15 appearances last season, mostly as a backup.
After the return came the medical problems
Shortly after his return to BVB in the summer of 2016, Götze’s career had already taken a downward turn. The reason was health problems. Due to a metabolic disease, the Dortmunders missed him for most of the first half of 2017.
While his World Cup colleagues André Schürrle and Benedikt Höwedes surprisingly ended their careers earlier this summer, Götze left his future open. There was also speculation about a return to Bayern. Other alleged candidates were AS Monaco, Bayer Leverkusen, FC Valencia and FC Sevilla.
