While his companions were still standing, Mario Götze had already sat down on the bench.

He sat laughing next to Lars Unnerstall, the former Schalke goalkeeper, and joked. Götze was in a good mood after his debut for PSV Eindhoven. After all, the newcomer scored in his first game and led Eindhoven to a sovereign 3-0 (3-0) against PEC Zwolle and thus to the top of the table.

Götze has already found the fun of football again, he delivered right away and announced great things. (Götze’s debut for reading)

Götze: “Give me some more games”

“My feelings and my condition improve every day and that’s really good for me. I need a few more weeks to get really fit and be able to play 100 percent. Give me a few more games and we will see where I am,” Gotze said Fox Sports smiling and expressive after the game. It seemed as if faith had returned to its own strength.

After the final whistle, it was less than an hour before the ex-dortmund spoke on social networks. “Happy for my first game and first goal. Thanks for the support,” wrote the 2014 world champion and posted a video of his goal. Former teammates like Thomas Müller and Jérôme Boateng were quick to congratulate them in the comments.

In the eighth minute, Götze, called up in the 4-3-3 system in central midfield, showed his old skills as he executed a back pass from Zwolles Clint Leemans, circled goalkeeper Michael Zetterer and pushed to make it 1-0. It was the door opener for PSV’s victory. Gotze was named a player of the game.

Götze: the man for that special moment

Especially in the early stages, it was hard to see that it was his first meeting with his new team and that Götze was lacking match practice. After all, he had only played ten minutes in the 0-1 draw against FC Bayern on May 26 and then played no more games. It was only at the start of the second half that Götze dived deeper and deeper and was replaced exhausted in the 63rd minute.

But it was already apparent that Götze has technical skills that no one else on the team has in midfield. Götze will be the man of those special moments, while his two people at his side play more safely in the center. However, the last liveliness and endurance are still missing. Gotze still has to work on that.

Already after the first appearance, Götze made a strong impression. “It was a very good start for him. After three months without a match he needs confidence in himself. The early goal helped him and he was well integrated. He also worked well against the ball,” praised coach Roger Schmidt.

His new protégé agreed after his dream debut. “It was really important for me to score right away. It was certainly happy, but maybe also smart. It’s a good feeling to score and play again,” Götze said after his first goal since December 20, 2019 in 1: 2 against TSG Hoffenheim.

PSV fans celebrate Götze

PSV fans also celebrated the 28-year-old after his debut on social media. “It’s always good to have an idol with you! He hasn’t forgotten anything. Nice goal,” wrote one. “Gotze was really strong,” said another. “Surely a bigger club would have deserved in the constitution. How lucky for us that we have it,” was the analysis of another fan.

The Dutch press also liked the Memminger native’s game.

International soccer praised the newcomer: “Götze needed less than ten minutes to introduce himself to Dutch football.” the AD entitled: “Götze had a great debut and ushered in victory.” The Telegraph commented: “Roger Schmidt immediately had a starting place for Götze. And the 2014 WW hero didn’t take long. He struck after eight minutes.”
