Formerly social democracy, hereafter satire: Marco Bülow, who has been a member of the SPD for many years and is now not affiliated with the Bundestag, has joined the satirical party »Die Party«. Party leader and satirist Martin Sonneborn presented Bülow with an oversized membership card at a joint press conference in Berlin on Tuesday.
“The Party” is now represented in the Bundestag for the first time. In total, there are now representatives from nine parties in the Bundestag, plus five unaffiliated men and one woman.
Bülow justified his entry on his website by saying that “The Party” with its “analysis and satirical comments” reveals “how rigid and absurd mainstream politics and its established system have become.” The “party” has “found its own way to expose the prevailing grievances in this country and in Europe,” the 49-year-old said. It’s more than just “joking around” and “sticking your fingers in the wound.” He wanted »The Party« to remain mockingly dubious and satirical, but believed that clear positions could be beneficial, especially on the issues of lobbying and democracy management.
Former Titanic editor-in-chief and current party leader Sonneborn referred to the two MEPs and more than 240 local “party” politicians when handing over the membership card and said: “There is still room for improvement.” Sonneborn himself has one. mandates in the European Parliament and draws attention there, above all, with lobbying criticism and speeches on EU migration policy.
26 years of membership in the SPD
Bülow has been a member of the Bundestag since 2002 and wants to run again as a direct candidate in his constituency of Dortmund next year. He left the SPD in November 2018 after 26 years of membership and justified it with his re-entry into a grand coalition with the Union and with general dissatisfaction with the trajectory of the Social Democrats. However, he maintained his mandate in the Bundestag.
Non-registered members have only limited speaking rights in plenary and cannot vote in committees. Bülow is the only unregistered party that was not a member of the AfD previously.
Shortly after the 2017 federal elections, former AfD president Frauke Petry and North Rhine-Westphalia member of the Bundestag Mario Mieruch left the parliamentary group and party. At the end of 2018, Uwe Kamann announced his departure from the AfD, followed by Lars Herrmann in late 2019 and Verena Hartmann earlier this year. The reasons for leaving were the increasingly right-wing orientation of the AfD. While the other colleagues work independently, Kamann has been a member of the »Liberal-Conservative Reformers« (LKR) since the beginning of September.
