Many new infections: Berlin exceeds corona warning value

Berlin is increasingly becoming a hotspot for the crown. According to the Senate Administration, the number of corona cases has exceeded the limit of 50 new infections per 100,000 residents.

One of the key figures important to assess the Corona situation has risen for the first time above the warning value of 50 for all of Berlin. The number of new infections reported per 100,000 inhabitants in the last seven days in the capital is now 52.8. This emerges from Corona’s management report from the Senate Health Administration. The value had steadily increased recently. However, when it comes to possible Senate action, Berlin’s own early warning system is crucial.

The mark of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in the last week is considered a central criterion: the federal and state governments had agreed that local countermeasures would be taken in particularly affected areas that exceed the value. In the four Berlin boroughs of Neukölln, Mitte, Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg and Tempelhof-Schöneberg, the so-called seven-day incidence has far exceeded 50 for a few days, which is why some federal states have declared them risk zones.

According to the management report, 498 new confirmed corona cases have now been added in Berlin. This is the largest increase since the pandemic began. So far, a total of 17,112 people in the capital have been diagnosed with Covid-19. 13,965 are considered recovered, 178 more than the previous day. The number of Corona-related deaths rose by one to 233. Last Tuesday, the Berlin Senate had already decided on new measures to contain the virus: these target nightlife with a curfew and stricter contact bans. for inside and outside. The rules apply from Saturday.

Authorities attributed the increase in the number of cases in recent weeks to private celebrations and illegal parties in particular. Since October 3, more restrictions have been enforced in Berlin, including the requirement for masks in office buildings. It will take some time for these measurements to be reflected in the number of infections. The background to the resolutions is also that, in deviation from the federal-state agreement, the Berlin Senate decided in May to have its own warning system, the so-called Corona traffic light. The number of new infections is only one of three indicators. Also taken into account are the so-called reproduction number, where the traffic light is currently yellow, and the occupation of intensive care beds with people infected with corona – here the traffic light is green.

The crown traffic light signaled the need for advice and action to the Senate some time ago: the cutoff values for new corona cases are lower than in the federal-state agreement. From only 20 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants in seven days, the traffic light shows a yellow light, from 30 a red light, as long as the value is exceeded three days in a row.
