After comparing Chancellor Merkel to Adolf Hitler, the Maltese ambassador to Finland resigned. Merkel had fulfilled Hitler’s dream of controlling Europe, she wrote on Facebook.

DThe Maltese ambassador to Finland resigned because he compared Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) to Adolf Hitler.

According to Maltese media, Michael Zammit Tabona had written in a Facebook post that has since been removed: “75 years ago we arrested Hitler. Who will stop Angela Merkel? He fulfilled Hitler’s dream of controlling Europe. “

Malta’s Foreign Minister Evarist Bartolo confirmed to the Times of Malta newspaper on Sunday that the ambassador had resigned and that an apology would be sent for the “callous” comment to Germany.

Foreign Minister: Words do not reflect Malta’s position

The end of World War II was celebrated 75 years ago in Europe on Friday. Zammit Tabona left his post with immediate effect, the Maltese Foreign Ministry said. His words did not reflect Malta’s position, based on friendship and mutual respect between the two countries.

The Facebook post has since been removed. Foreign Minister Bartolo said he immediately ordered the ambassador to delete the comment “as soon as I find out.” It would remind diplomats to use social media appropriately and responsibly in the future. Zammit Tabona has been an ambassador to Finland since 2014.

Maltese opposition leader Adrian Delia said the Facebook post was inappropriate behavior for an ambassador. He noted that the German chancellor had always supported Malta on various issues. Merkel is a “source of stability in Europe” and a defender of democracy. According to Delia, Zammit Tabona was not a professional diplomat, but was chosen by the government as ambassador. The Maltese Chamber of Commerce said in a horrified statement, saying the diplomat’s remarks harm the country’s reputation.
