The Spanish summer continues to darken: instead of going to the sea, Mallorca is going to close, in Madrid the doctors go on strike due to virus overload. The country has more than 10,000 new infections in a single day, and almost every region is fighting the sources of infection.
Doctors in Madrid want to stop working due to corona overload. The largest medical union in the region around the Spanish capital has called an “unlimited and full” strike as of September 28. The strike had already been announced for workers in the primary health care sector, but other sectors would join in the coming weeks, he said. For years there has been a lack of human and financial resources, the union complained in a statement released late in the evening.
“In recent months, however, the pandemic has made the situation worse, which is unacceptable to us.” The president of the Community of Madrid, Isabel Díaz Ayuso, had not responded to the request that had been made to her on several occasions to meet to discuss the problems. Madrid was hit particularly hard by the pandemic in the Corona hotspot, Spain, in the spring, and is now again the region of the country most affected by the new outbreaks.
There are still no signs of a trend reversal in the dynamics of infections in Spain. The number of new infections has increased significantly more recently than in the previous week. During the course of Thursday, the Spanish authorities registered 10,764 new cases of coronavirus. The total number of cases of infection registered since the beginning of the pandemic amounts to 554,143. A total of 29,699 people have already died in Spain in relation to the coronavirus infection. There are regional sources of infection in almost all parts of the country. Aragon, Cantabria, Castilla y León, La Rioja, Navarra, the enclave of Melilla and the Madrid capital region are particularly affected. Authorities also report a growing number of cases in the Canary Islands, with special attention to Gran Canaria and Lanzarote. In Mallorca, Palma de Mallorca is particularly affected.
23,000 people in Mallorca have to go through confinement
Due to the increasing number of infections, Majorcan authorities are closing parts of the island’s capital, Palma de Mallorca. The blockade will take effect on Friday at 10 pm and will apply for at least two weeks, announced the regional government of the Spanish island. Almost 23,000 of Palma’s 416,000 residents are affected by exit restrictions at the popular tourist center.
The regulation applies to four districts outside the historic center. People can only leave their neighborhoods to go to work, school, or the doctor. They are allowed to move freely within the cordoned off area, but authorities asked residents to leave their houses and apartments only for compelling reasons.
Gyms and parks have to close. Bars, restaurants and cafes can only offer half of their usual seats and must also close at 10 pm Meetings are limited to five participants. By early September, the number of infections in the four densely populated neighborhoods had risen to 496 per 100,000 inhabitants, almost three times the number on the entire island of Mallorca.
