Leadership change officially
1. FSV Mainz 05 has parted ways with their coach Jan-Moritz Lichte. After just six points and 17th place in the league (at the table), Lichte, who had taken over in September from Achim Beierlorzer, who was out at the time, came under increasing pressure.
The latest Bundesliga results of the “zero five” were sobering: Mainz lost both direct relegation duels against Bielefeld (1: 2) and Cologne (0: 1), followed by Hertha (0: 0) and Bremen (0: 0): 1) almost no increase.
With Christian Heidel and former coach Martin Schmidt, a new management duo return to the old workplace as expected. Heidel, assuming the role of “Director of Strategy, Sport and Communication”, worked in Mainz until four years ago before moving to FC Schalke 04 (until March 2019). In reality, it was planned that he would join the Mainz board as an additional member of the sporting director Rouven Schröder. However, Schröder has left the club and surprised his former employer.
Schmidt becomes Heidel’s sports director and right-hand man, a role that the former coach has yet to play in his career and is being created for him at the club. More recently, the 53-year-old worked as an expert on Swiss television, from 2010 to 2015 he was coach of Mainz II before taking over the pros for just over two years. As a result, Schmidt also coached FC Augsburg and VfL Wolfsburg in the Bundesliga.
New start with familiar faces!

Svensson’s favorite to succeed Lichte: further engagement possible in Mainz
It is not yet clear who will be the new coach, youth boss Jan Siewert will initially take over the training. The favorite to succeed Lichtes is former Mainz professional Bo Svensson, who coached FSV-U19 until 2019 and currently works for FC Liefering in Austria.
On the released Lichte, CEO Stefan Hofmann said: “Jan-Moritz Lichte is an absolute football expert who has been particularly committed to the club in a difficult situation. Our thanks to him for this. We have agreed with him that we will sit down after a certain time and discuss to what extent there may be a future assignment for him in Mainz 05. “
