Lugano, Switzerland: Woman attacks women with knife, possibly terrorist background

A woman attacked two customers with a knife at a department store in Lugano, in the Swiss canton of Ticino, on Tuesday afternoon. The federal prosecutor assumes a “suspected terrorist attack”, as he wrote on Twitter.

According to Swiss media reports, the woman grabbed her first victim by the neck with her bare hands, while wounding the second with a stabbing weapon to the neck. The woman was taken to the hospital seriously injured. According to the Corriere del Ticino, the attacker stole the knife from the home department.

The alleged perpetrator was arrested. According to the Ticino canton police commander Matteo Cocchi, the police knew her. She is a 28-year-old Swiss woman.

According to the Federal Prosecutor’s Office, criminal proceedings will be opened against the attacker, among other things, on suspicion of intentional homicide, serious bodily injury and violation of the prohibition of extremist groups Al-Qaeda and Islamic State (IS).
