Schoolchildren start their Christmas break earlier due to the corona pandemic. According to the Lower Saxony State Chancellery, December 18 is the last day of classes.

According to the vacation planner, Tuesday, December 22, would have been the last regular day of school this year. As things stand, classes will begin on Monday, January 11 after the break. The extension is the result of talks between prime ministers on additional corona measures. Only Bremen disagreed, they say.

Minister of Education so far against extension

For a long time, Lower Saxony opposed an earlier start to the Christmas holidays. Education Minister Grand Hendrik Tonne (SPD) had examined a student’s proposal in late October and rejected it. At that time there was the idea of leaving students at home from Friday and supervising them in homeschooling on Mondays and Tuesdays. The aim was to reduce the contacts and, therefore, the risk of contagion from children and adolescents long before Christmas to protect older relatives.
