Tragic accident on a rural road in Lower Saxony: a mother crashed directly into a tree near Cloppenburg. One of her children and she died. Five other children and the passenger were taken to hospital.

The 37-year-old driver of the car died Friday night at the crash site, the boy succumbing to serious injuries at a clinic in the morning, as police spokesman Hendrik Ebmeyer said on Saturday. The 32-year-old passenger and five other children are seriously injured. According to Ebmeyer, two of them remain in mortal danger.

It is still unclear why the car hit a tree in a straight line about 40 kilometers east of the German-Dutch border on Friday night, the police spokesman said. In any case, the car homologated for seven people was crammed with eight occupants. “We have to assume that at least one passenger was uninsured,” Ebmeyer said. According to him, all the victims of the accident come from the Cloppenburg district.

Any help came too late for the 37-year-old driver. The rescue teams were only able to rescue them dead from the wrecked car. According to the police, the woman was traveling with four children. The 11-year-old boy was flown to the Netherlands in a rescue helicopter after the accident, but died there on Saturday morning. Two of the other three children between the ages of two and ten are in mortal danger. A boy and the 32-year-old passenger and their 9- and 13-year-old daughters are considered seriously injured.

Probably no other car involved

At the scene of the accident in the Cloppenburg district, four helicopters and several ambulances were in action that night. The police spokesman emphasized that the first responders had previously treated the injured with great care.
